Sober Magic, Art, and The Year of the Magician: A Conversation with Sarah Potter
As we step into a new year, many of us are looking for a gentle reset—whether that’s reevaluating our relationship with substances, seeking new creative inspiration, or simply trying to find a bit of magic in the mundane.
In this week’s episode of the Create! Podcast, host Ekaterina Popova sits down with her dear friend—psychic medium, curator, and author Sarah Potter. Sarah recently released her life-changing new book, Sober Magic, and joined us to discuss the intersection of art and spirituality, navigating the "party culture" of the art world, and what the Tarot has in store for us in 2026.
Here are some of the most powerful takeaways from their conversation.
From Curator to Professional Witch
Sarah’s journey didn’t start with a crystal ball; it started in art galleries. For years, she worked as a curator and art advisor, helping clients build collections. However, she began to realize that her success in placing art wasn't just about aesthetics—it was about her intuition. She noticed that art itself is a spiritual practice and that artists often act as channels for the divine.
Eventually, Sarah realized that her role in the art world needed to evolve. She transitioned into working full-time as a psychic medium and Tarot reader, noting that resisting change is never good because the art world—and life itself—is always evolving. Today, she continues to work with artists, musicians, and actors, helping them channel messages that are then reflected in their creative work.
Navigating the Art World While Sober
One of the biggest hurdles for creatives reevaluating their relationship with alcohol is the social aspect of the art world: openings, fairs, and galas are often fueled by champagne. Sarah, who has been sober for nearly nine years, offers a refreshing perspective on the "tortured artist" trope, reminding us that we don’t need to keep ourselves in chaos to create good work.
Sarah’s Tips for Sober Socializing:
*The 15-Minute Rule*: If you are overwhelmed, just commit to staying for 15 minutes. If you can do that, try another 15. You don't have to push yourself too far out of your comfort zone.
Use "Glamour Magic": Armor yourself with fashion and intention. Sarah suggests wearing talismans, like a piece of heirloom jewelry for strength, or even a sharp black cat-eye liner for protection.
Bring a Buddy: It is okay to ask for help. Bring a supportive friend who knows your boundaries and can check in on you.
Indulge Your Curiosity: If you are questioning your drinking, just indulge that curiosity. You don't have to label it immediately, but give yourself the freedom to look at it.
Facing Discomfort & The "Scary" Tarot Cards
Whether it’s sobriety or creative blocks, growth often comes with discomfort. Kat shared her experience of being "stalked" by the Temperance card and feeling discomfort around cards like the 5 of Pentacles.
Sarah’s advice for when the Tarot (or life) hands you something uncomfortable is to shift your perspective. Instead of fearing the aversion, get curious about it. Ask yourself: What is this showing me? Why don't I want to go near this?. She reminds us that while discomfort can feel excruciating, it won't kill us, and there is immense power in acknowledging a feeling and then choosing to do something else.
The 2026 Tarot Forecast: The Year of the Magician
We couldn't let Sarah leave without a peek into the energy of 2026! According to numerology and the Tarot, we are entering a "1" year, which corresponds to The Magician (and the Wheel of Fortune, which is 10).
What this means for creatives:
Manifestation Power: The Magician reminds you that you already have all the tools, skills, and talents you need at your fingertips.
Set Your Intention: This is a year to ask yourself: What do you desire? Once you have direction, you can make it so.
Inevitability of Change: The Wheel of Fortune reminds us that change is the only certainty. Everything is temporary and always in motion, so embrace the cycle.
Dive Deeper
If you are looking for a framework to support your journey—whether it’s sobriety or simply a deeper connection to your intuition—Sarah’s new book, Sober Magic, is a beautiful guide. It uses the 12-step framework paired with the Tarot to help you navigate life.
