Young Shin, featured in both Create! Magazine and the Create! Magazine 10th Anniversary Book, is a collage artist working primarily with paper, based between Los Angeles, California, and Madison, Wisconsin. She received a fashion studies degree from Parsons School of Design and has since developed an independent studio practice, exhibiting across the United States, with work held in private, corporate, and public collections internationally.
Shin’s practice explores the tension between control and release through processes of folding, tearing, layering, and compression, examining how material can be structured with intention before shifting beyond the hand. Influenced by the quiet rigor of postwar abstraction and informed by her background in fashion, she approaches paper with a sensitivity to structure, drape, and the behavior of fiber under pressure.
Her work has been exhibited at Dorado 806 Projects, The Scholar Selection, and the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles, among others. Recent and upcoming exhibitions include Bright Rupture: Works from the Rift Series, a solo exhibition at Alhambra City Hall, and the 14th Annual Art Competition at Bridgeport Art Center in Chicago.
Her work is held in institutional and corporate collections, including UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay, Winston & Strawn LLP, and Wells Fargo, as well as international hotel, resort, and multi-residential collections. It is also held in the public collection of the Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History, where she participated in the Collagists in the Archives residency.
She is currently developing expansive, physically immersive works that extend her investigation of material tension, as control is negotiated across enlarged surfaces and spatial depth.
