Susan Schmidt, featured in both Create! Magazine and the Create! Magazine10th Anniversary Book, is a mid-career artist based in Noosa Heads, Australia. A self-taught painter whose practice is shaped by a 13-year discipline as an advertising illustrator, following graduation from the South Australian School of Art in 1980. Her works are contemporary, figurative with subtle abstract elements, underpinned by concern for the environment.

Paintings layered and rubbed back evoke nostalgia and echo memory and loss. Schmidt has exhibited in solo and selected shows since 1998 and internationally since 2012, including the New York Chelsea International Art Competition, Contemporary Istanbul, Singapore Contemporary, and the Rise Art Prize ‘Global Artist of the Year’ award in London. She was awarded ‘Best in Show’ in the Local Contemporary Art Prize, Sunshine Coast, Australia, in 2021 and 2024.

Her work is held in the Sunshine Coast University Private and Public Hospital, Sunshine Coast University, and Sunshine Coast Council art collections. She was a recipient of the Austrade Export Market and Development Grant, 2012 to 2016, and in 2016, by invitation, artist-in-residence at One & Only Reethi Rah, Maldives. Susan’s work has been selected, awarded, and collected nationally and internationally.
