Shelly Thanner

Shelly Thanner (b. 1991) is a German contemporary artist whose work blends earthy materiality with intuitive, mystical storytelling. Working primarily with acrylics, natural pigments, and textured mediums on cotton canvas, she explores liminal spaces — places where light meets shadow, softness meets depth, and transformation unfolds quietly beneath the surface.

Her practice is a meditative process, rooted in themes of nature, spirituality, ritual, and introspection. Drawing inspiration from nature, seasonal cycles, mythic symbolism, and the emotional landscapes of the inner world, her paintings often function as portals — atmospheric, layered thresholds that invite viewers into moments of stillness, grounding, and introspection.

Thanner’s work has been exhibited in galleries in Germany, including Galerie Ostermayr in Nuremberg. She is an active member of the AURA art collective and also co-runs a tattoo and art studio. She currently lives and works in Nuremberg, Germany.

Artist Statement

My work explores quiet thresholds — moments between darkness and light, stillness and motion, grounding and emergence. I am drawn to the intuitive, atmospheric qualities of acrylics and natural pigments, using layered washes, earthy tones, and organic textures to create paintings that feel both internal and elemental, like emotional landscapes made visible.

My creative process is meditative and spiritual. I work intuitively, following movement, depth, and flow, allowing each piece to reveal itself slowly through gesture, softness, and atmosphere. This practice feels like listening — a quiet attunement to what wants to emerge. Many of my works carry a sense of ritual and grounding, shaped by contemplative stillness and an inner state of presence.

Nature, seasonal rhythms, and mythic symbolism guide my inspiration. I am drawn to the subtle magic found in forests, the cyclical wisdom of the natural world, and the emotional landscapes of the inner self.

This sense of quiet transformation naturally aligns with the Winter Solstice theme, where a gentle return of light moves through the dark. I aim to create paintings that function as portals — visual spaces that hold warmth within darkness and movement within stillness. Each work is a gentle invitation to sit and stay for a while, to turn inward, to feel, and to connect with the quiet magic of the sacred in-between.
