Nicolle Cure
Nicolle Cure is a Colombian-American artist based in Miami. Her mixed-media abstract paintings explore the intersection of sound, emotion, and visual form, deeply influenced by her personal journey with partial hearing loss and balance challenges.
In 2017, Nicolle experienced sudden hearing loss in one ear and was later diagnosed with Ménière’s disease, a condition affecting both hearing and equilibrium. This profound experience reshaped her artistic practice, inspiring her to translate sensations of sound, silence, and shifting balance into fluid compositions rich in color and movement.
Her work often evokes abstract sonic landscapes—whispers, lullabies, and quiet moments of reflection. Drawing from surrealism, she layers expressive brushstrokes with dreamlike forms, delicate washes, and symbolic shapes. Many pieces feature graphite and ink lines that invite viewers to pause, reflect, and find calm amid life’s constant flux.
Nicolle’s paintings have been exhibited at prestigious international art fairs such as Art Basel Miami, the Beijing International Art Expo, and the Seoul Open Art Fair (SOAF). She is represented by several galleries, and her work is held in private and corporate collections across the U.S., Europe, Asia, and South America.
With a background in advertising and media, Nicolle brings a strong visual language and narrative depth to her work. Her pieces act as emotional landscapes—contemplative spaces inviting introspection and connection on a personal level.
Ultimately, Nicolle’s paintings offer moments of stillness and subtle grace, encouraging a mindful presence amid the fast-paced rhythm of everyday life.
Artist Statement
Expressing myself through visual art has been my language since childhood, shaping my identity. Growing up in Barranquilla, Colombia, near the Caribbean Sea, I was surrounded by vibrant culture and creativity, influenced by my father, an architect and painter, and my mother, a textile and fashion designer. For me, art is more than an activity—it’s a way of life.
In 2017, my life changed with sudden partial hearing loss, tinnitus, and hyperacusis. This profound experience deepened my exploration of sound and silence, inspiring abstract paintings that create quiet refuges—spaces for stillness and reflection.
My work represents moments of introspection, resilience, and transformation: accepting change and finding beauty in the unexpected. Some pieces convey calm, others movement or contrast, but all share the intention to explore what lies beneath the surface. This exploration translates naturally into textures, material contrasts, and layered depths with details that invite a second look.
Rooted in my relationship with sound—or its absence—my work extends beyond hearing loss. It reflects the many layers within us as human beings, both visible and invisible. Each piece emerges from a dialogue between what is heard, felt, and held in silence.
I build my paintings with translucent layers of ink and acrylic, layering forms to echo the complexity of the human experience. Repetitive lines serve as meditative marks, while negative space mirrors my process of adapting to sound sensitivity.
My approach is intuitive and spontaneous, allowing compositions to find their own rhythm—a balance of control and surrender, much like my journey with hearing and balance challenges.
At its core, my art is about resilience: transforming limitation into possibility, and silence into expression.
