Lauren Crasco
Lauren Crasco works with a variety of media, including oil paint, paper collage, and graphite. Born in Boston, she relocated to California after receiving a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University. She is based in San Francisco but works across the United States and internationally as a production designer for film and television. As a designer, she focuses on the essential physical details that convey location and character, building an appropriate environment to reveal these specifics on camera. As a visual artist, she enjoys the freedom of creating imagined worlds that are intentionally undefined and sparsely populated.
In her ongoing collage series featuring the female figure, she creates tableaus from vintage and contemporary magazine advertisements and fashion editorials. She augments her truncated sections of women with botanical imagery to create feminine archetypes, distilled to a simple gesture or posture. The anonymity of the solitary figure raises questions about personal identity and the essence of beauty.
