Jody Hewgill, featured in both Create! Magazine and the Create! Magazine 10th Anniversary Book, is an artist and award-winning illustrator based in Toronto. Her detailed acrylic paintings have been displayed across a wide range of settings, from a Broadway marquee to gallery exhibitions. Hewgill studied at Dawson College in Montréal and is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design University, where she is currently an Associate Professor.
Hewgill’s work explores narratives that emerge from the convergence of representation and fabrication, where the natural and the artificial meet and redefine ecological relationships. Her detailed acrylic paintings are infused with references to 18th-century naturalist art and reflect the fragile human relationship with the natural world, drawing inspiration from the natural surroundings at her summer painting studio in Northern Ontario.
Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at Philippe Labaune Gallery, NYC; The Lyceum Gallery, Toronto; Robert Berman Gallery, Santa Monica; La Luz de Jesus Gallery, LA; Nucleus Gallery, Alhambra; Museo Nazionale Etrusco, Rome; Enid Lawson Gallery, London; Japanese American National Museum, LA; and Art Now Fair, Miami, among others.
Hewgill’s work has been featured in several publications and media, including New Acrylics Essential Sourcebook, Taschen’s The Illustrator: 100 Best from Around the World, and Rolling Stone’s The Illustrated Portraits. A selection of paintings from her 2023 solo exhibition Novel Companions was featured in the curated section of Create! Magazine Issue #40. A series of her theatre posters are included in the Permanent Poster Collection of the Library of Congress.
