Jake McCauley, featured in both Create! Magazine and the Create! Magazine 10th Anniversary Book, is a painter based in Pittsburgh, PA. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Kutztown University in 2013 and has been exhibiting work and building an independent studio practice ever since.

McCauley’s work is based in mundane realism, influenced by cinema, pop culture, and Post-Impressionism. Often painting or drawing voyeuristic scenes that explore the themes of observation and memory, place and temperature. Windows are a subject in his work, and he explores the experience of seeing through them, catching a reflection, and the vulnerable protection they provide.

His work has been exhibited in Pennsylvania and New York, including exhibitions with The Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, Lascaux Gallery at Rogue Space in Chelsea, NYC, Maggie’s Farm Strip District Barrelhouse, The Spinning Plate Gallery, and The Packwood House, among others.

He participated in the NYC Crit Club, which furthered his studio practice during the COVID-19 pandemic. Working as a carpenter for more than a decade, he is currently focused on restoring a house from the late 1800s in Braddock, PA, where his studio will be relocated. He is restoring period-correct windows for the home to be installed and become the focus of his new work, placing them to provide a view of the Edgar Thompson Steel Works, one of the last operating steel mills in America.
