Jessica Snow

Jessica lives and works in the Bay Area, where she received her MFA from Mills College and her BA from UC Davis. She also attended the Sorbonne and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and currently she teaches in the art history department at the University of San Francisco. She has participated in many shows internationally and spends her summers in residency on the Aegean Sea.


Artist Statement

My Tides and Starlight series is based on celestial light and the moon’s relationship to the tides. Living on the San Francisco Bay during the winter months, I’m very attuned to the shifting tides, phases of the moon, and the atmospheric rivers that pass through frequently. This series is based on the interaction of these forces of nature.

The painting Nyx is inspired by the primordial Greek goddess of the night, and I chose the constellation Scorpius to depict her. I painted this on Kefalonia in Greece. The location on the south side of the island where I was working had just been declared a dark sky park that summer.
