Turn On the Light: James Miille’s First Solo Exhibition in Mexico City
James Miille Debuts First Solo Exhibition in Mexico City at ALMANAQUE-fotográfica
Turn On the Light | June 12–29, 2025 | Mexico City
This June, ALMANAQUE-fotográfica presents Turn On the Light, the debut solo exhibition in Mexico City by fine art photographer James Miille. On view from June 12 through June 29, 2025, the exhibition offers a deeply personal exploration of resilience, identity, and creative light in the face of profound adversity.
Catalyzed by a life-altering cancer diagnosis and subsequent chemotherapy treatment, Miille transforms vulnerability into visual poetry. Turn On the Light draws its title from a line in the Harry Potter series that became a guiding mantra during treatment: "Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light." What unfolds is a dreamlike body of work that fuses self-portraiture, narrative symbolism, and surreal composition.
Each piece in the exhibition is inspired by a song that helped sustain the artist through his healing journey, serving as both a sonic and visual soundtrack to a period of deep introspection. The resulting photographs—delicate yet powerful—merge Miille’s signature polished aesthetic with themes of queerness, selfhood, and emotional endurance.
“For me, this exhibition isn’t just about surviving cancer—it’s about honoring the inner light that persists, even when life dims around us,” says Miille.
An interdisciplinary approach underscores the opening night on June 12, which features a conceptual performance by dancer Francisco Rojas. Visitors can expect an immersive experience where movement, light, and photographic narrative converge to tell a story of survival and artistic transformation.
