Painting from the Subconscious: How August Vilella Built an International Career Through Intuition
The Role of the Subconscious
August Vilella starts every painting without sketches, reference photos, or a plan. This is the foundation of his practice. Even with the high level of detail in his work, August does not know what will emerge when he begins a piece.
In this episode, August joins us from Tokyo to discuss his Surreal-Intuitive method. He uses a meditative state to let characters and themes develop naturally. His work has gained significant attention in the global art market, with exhibitions spanning from Hong Kong to New York.
Building a Career in Japan
In 2020, August traveled to Japan for a two week exhibition. Due to the pandemic, he stayed and has now lived there for five years.
"It was the most important decision of my life," he says. This move changed his work. His paintings now include elements of the Japanese landscape, such as cherry blossoms and local nature. Living in Japan also placed him strategically within the active Asian art market.
Highlights from the conversation:
The Intuitive Method: Balancing spontaneity with the technical discipline of thin oil layers.
Education and Style: Why August suggests finding your signature style before seeking technical art training.
The Importance of Networking: Why attending openings and art fairs is the best way to find new opportunities.
Ten Years of Professional Practice
This year marks a decade since August’s first exhibition. His current projects include a 500 square meter show in Shenzhen and solo exhibitions in Tokyo.
August’s career is an example of how self-taught artists can reach the highest levels of the art world by trusting their own process.
