Artist Statement

I create intricate, hand-cut paper relief sculptures exploring the delicate balance between our fragility and strength. My representational work uses dynamic compositions that feature botanical and anatomical forms. Flowers, plants, anatomical hearts, human organs, and skeletal structures tell deeper stories about resilience and inner beauty through their symbolic meanings. I am particularly drawn to the ways in which the natural world mirrors the experiences of women—plants endure harsh conditions yet continue to adapt, regrow, and bloom. Paper itself embodies this duality—seemingly delicate, yet surprisingly strong.

Each piece begins with detailed sketches and careful planning, ensuring every element harmonizes. I select papers with intention, considering their weight, color, and texture to enhance the depth and dimension of my work. Using precision tools, I meticulously cut, shape, and layer each component, creating a composition rich in color, light, and shadow.

My art is influenced by traditional paper-cutting techniques from China, Japan, Poland, and Germany, as well as the cut paper works of Henri Matisse. Georgia O’Keeffe’s floral and skull paintings also serve as inspiration. A fascination with biology, botany, and my lived experiences as a woman and mother all shape my creative practice. At its core, my art is about the connection between humans, nature, and the enduring bonds that link us all.

Mini Interview

What is the central theme or concept behind your current body of work?

My work is about the balance between fragility and strength, specifically how it mirrors both the human experience and the natural world. I pair delicate botanical details with anatomical shapes, like hearts and bones, to show that true resilience comes from vulnerability.

How do you hope your work resonates with or impacts your viewers?

I want people to pause and feel a sense of curiosity, drawing them in close enough to reflect on their own inner strength. I hope the work reminds viewers that going through a harsh season doesn’t break us. Ultimately, I want people to walk away feeling empowered, realizing that adapting and blooming again is a beautiful act of power.

Can you share a pivotal moment that has shaped your artistic journey?

The most pivotal moment in my journey was becoming a mother. Navigating the sometimes overwhelming challenges and profound joys of raising children has completely reshaped my perspective on what it means to be resilient.

What advice would you offer to emerging artists navigating today’s art world?

Building an art career is a marathon, not a sprint. Remember to trust your unique voice, keep showing up, and keep moving forward. When things get overwhelming, it is completely okay to take breaks to protect your creative energy. Your art will always be there for you.

Are there any upcoming projects or exhibitions you would like to share with our readers?

I’m currently creating new, larger-scale paper sculptures that build on my current body of work. I’m incredibly excited to see how scaling up changes the energy of these intricate pieces.
