Maya Rae Miller
Maya Rae Miller is a 22-year-old Boston-based artist working primarily with pencil on paper. She has studied fine arts in Boston, USA, and in Paris, France. She focuses on automatic drawing, a surrealist technique rooted in automatism that explores the subconscious mind. Her process is a meditative journey of self-discovery. Her hand moves freely, guided by intuition and time, without any pressure to preconceive an outcome. Maya Rae investigates how this release of control fosters a deeper, more visceral understanding of humanity’s relationship to beauty and creation.
Each artwork, for her, is an emotional entity, evolving until it resonates aesthetically. She views the physical act of drawing—through touch, pressure, and movement—as a form of spiritual alchemy, transforming her energy and emotions into something sacred. In this way, her work bridges a gap between the earthly and the mental, revealing new layers of understanding through the act of surrender to the unknown. Her practice is a physical exploration of the moment when time, energy, and physical space converge.
Maya Rae understands beauty as a subjective experience; she intends each drawing to reflect personal perception. She invites viewers to project their own experiences. Each patient observer is offered unique discoveries, exploring how beauty and intuition interact to become an emotional outlet, and how these open forms provoke viewers to find themselves within the work—asking, how can feelings serve as portals for abstract thinking? She seeks to deepen understanding of emotion—its biological, cultural, and experiential dimensions. In being this gentle union of creation and meditation, her drawings prompt the opening of a new shared space, one where we might all meet, if just for a moment, and experience ourselves in one another.
