Lois, featured in AQ Volume VII, was raised in Levittown, Pennsylvania. As a child and teenager, she spent a great deal of her time drawing and painting. Growing up, the family spent summers in the Pocono Mountain region and Blakeslee, Pennsylvania, where her father was an avid outdoorsman. Lois grew to love being in the great outdoors. This influenced many of her early and current works.
Armed with a portfolio of work that she created at home, and an art scholarship awarded during high school graduation ceremonies, she applied to three prestigious art colleges and, to her great surprise, was accepted into all three—one of the highlights of her young life.
Lois selected Philadelphia College of Art, which provided the groundwork for her studies. She finished out her college art program at Wilkes University and graduated with a BA in Fine Art. Her education included working at the Sordoni Art Gallery. Additional lifetime studies include instruction in the studio of Atelier Joel Carson Jones and workshop training such as The Diagnostic Painter at the ANI Academy under Anthony Waichulis, Realism Live, a 3-day online training, and Dan Scott's Master Color Class.
About her creative process, Lois states:
"All of my pieces come from a personal place and moment in time. I see something and I think, 'I must capture this as a piece of art!' My style is between realism and painterly realism."
Lois’s award-winning work has been juried into many regional, national, and international shows and competitions and has been included in several publications, including Artist Magazine: Strokes of Genius Best of Drawing, Pastel Journal, and the Art Renewal Center 16th and 17th International Salon.
Artist Statement
All my pieces come from a personal place and moment in time. I particularly see the personalities and life’s moments as reflected in the toys that I paint. It can be the whimsy of a stuffed animal toy sheep that is having a sleepless night or capturing that horrible photo taken at the DMV! My art often encompasses all emotions, but I am also drawn to nature, reflections, shadows, movement, or simply something that caught my eye. I see or experience something and I think, "I must capture this as a piece of art!"
I want my art to tell a story. I know that people look at art and see it through their own lens and perspective. Each person will see and feel something very different, and I love hearing about that!
