Lisbeth Thygesen

Lisbeth Thygesen was born just south of Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1973. She now lives and works in Frederiksberg, Copenhagen.

She studied art history at the University of Copenhagen (1993–96) and also has a bachelor’s degree in social education (2001–04), where her main focus was aesthetic processes. These studies gave her a theoretical background in her art practice; however, when it comes to the practice of art, she is self-taught.

She is a versatile artist working in many mediums. Most of her paintings are acrylic on canvas, where she uses a glazing technique to create vibrant color and depth. Working with sculpture, she uses a mix of mediums like concrete, textiles, yarn, wood, rocks, clay, beads, and more.

She is, as an artist, deeply inspired by Nordic nature, connectedness to nature, as well as shamanism. This greatly affects her artistic expression. Her key themes are nature and our relationship to nature, magic, and mystical visions.

Exhibition highlights: Lisbeth has exhibited in several galleries, solo and group shows, art associations, and art fairs in Denmark, Sweden, Germany, and Spain. Her first solo exhibition was in 2015. She was accepted at one of the five major nationally recognized censored exhibitions in Denmark, The Artists Censored Easter Exhibition, in 2018, where artists from Denmark and around the world apply. Recently, she had a solo exhibition at a gallery in Copenhagen, Galleri kbh kunst.

Artist Statement

In my art, I study the beauty of nature and its deeper, invisible layers. Through a detailed palette, I explore magic, symbolism, folklore, and mystical visions. Each work is a portal to a world where the known and the unknown meet, a world filled with subtle narratives and enigmatic symbols that invite the viewer to interpret, sense, and feel.

The natural motifs from which I draw inspiration serve not only as a framework of beauty but as a medium to express the complex connections between the physical and the spiritual. I am fascinated by how nature can be a portal to our inner world, a reflection of all that is within us. In my paintings, I try to balance the physical and the spiritual by combining realistic details with a supernatural atmosphere, where symbolism often acts as a key to understanding.

My work is not just a visual experience; it is also a spiritual exploration. Each image is an invitation to enter a world where magic lives and is real, and mystical visions come to life. I see my paintings as a dialogue between our inner and outer world, where each brushstroke seeks to build a bridge between the visible and the subtle, between reality and myth.

I hope that my art can provide a sense of connection to something greater while also challenging and inspiring the viewer to explore their own inner worlds.
