Evi Antonio is a British-Cypriot contemporary artist whose work explores the hidden beauty and complexity of the natural world. Trained initially as a natural history illustrator, she developed a meticulous observational practice through watercolour before expanding into digital painting. Today, she combines these disciplines to create hand-finished digital works printed on museum-quality fine art paper, produced as both limited editions and unique pieces.

Butterflies sit at the centre of her practice, serving as symbols of transformation, resilience, and the interconnectedness of life. Working from real specimens, Antonio captures their vivid physical presence while magnifying intricate details that often escape notice. Through this heightened perspective, she invites viewers to slow down, look closely, and reconsider their relationship with the natural world.

Her work has been exhibited widely across the UK and internationally, including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and the 160th Anniversary Exhibition of the Salon des Beaux Arts in Paris. She has presented solo and group exhibitions throughout the UK, including a solo exhibition at Blacks Club, Soho, London. Her accolades include Best Artist, East of England at the National Open Art Competition (2016), The Secret Art Prize (2018), and The Cult House Open Call Award (2019).

Artist Statement

My practice is rooted in close observation and a desire to reveal the extraordinary within the overlooked. By enlarging and isolating elements of the natural world, particularly butterflies, I draw attention to details that are often missed, creating spaces for reflection, wonder, and reconnection.

Nature provides both subject matter and metaphor. The butterfly's life cycle embodies transformation, fragility, and renewal, mirroring the cycles of growth and change that shape human experience. Through these parallels, I explore themes of interconnectedness and our place within a larger ecological and universal system.

Many of my works layer delicate natural forms against weathered urban textures. These layered surfaces reference the increasing encroachment of human development on the natural environment while reflecting the visual and psychological noise of contemporary life. In contrast, the butterfly becomes a symbol of balance, resilience, and the enduring intelligence of nature.

In an age defined by distraction, environmental instability, and disconnection, my work invites viewers to pause and look more closely. Through acts of observation, I hope to foster a renewed awareness of our relationship with the living world and encourage a deeper sense of harmony between humanity and nature.
