Courtney Rae Balson

Courtney Balson (b. 1988, Pittsburgh, PA) is a Virginia-based artist whose work explores nature, plants, and ecosystems. Her practice is a combination of meditative field work, photography, drawing, and in-studio painting. She holds a BFA from RIT (2011).


Artist Statement

I explore fleeting, complex, and cyclical ecosystems with the use of layering, mood, and color. I capture the presence of a particular time and place, that will never exist again, in its current state. My process starts in the field with the physical act of immersing in meditative outdoor studies, plein air drawing and photography, as inspiration for studio work. My practice is a response to the increasing loss of native habitats and unrestricted overdevelopment, and the joy of the natural world in an online society.
