Alexandria Deters, featured in both Create! Magazine and the Create! Magazine10th Anniversary Book, is an interdisciplinary artist based in New York, NY. She received a Master’s degree in American Fine and Decorative Art from Sotheby’s Institute of Art in 2016 and has since developed a research-driven practice spanning photography, embroidery, video, and installation.
Deters’ work engages archival material, overlooked histories, and systems of visibility, positioning the artist as both researcher and witness. Through projects examining cult formations, media circulation, and the afterlives of events such as September 11, she considers how narratives are constructed, obscured, and circulated.
Her ongoing self-portrait series "R.R.R." (2022–present) combines photography, text, embroidery, and video to examine personal experience through repetition, documentation, and transformation. Hand-embroidery and text function as interventions that disrupt the photographic surface, insisting on slowness, labor, and multiplicity against the logic of mass reproduction.
Deters has presented solo exhibitions including "A Common Thread" at The Yard (Brooklyn, 2025), "Historical Fever Dreams" at BravinLee Programs (New York, 2024), and "Prophet of the Month" at The Locker Room (Brooklyn, 2022). She has participated in residencies at the Wassaic Project (Wassaic, NY, 2023) and Chargeurs Philanthropies (Marseille, France, 2025), and contributed writing to Cultbytes, Filthy Dreams, and UP Magazine.
She is currently focused on research-driven projects examining the legacy of Varian Fry alongside ongoing investigations into cult structures and figures who claim messianic identities.
