Umbreen Hasan

Umbreen Hasan is a Minnesota-based mixed media artist whose abstract works explore atmosphere, movement, and emotional resonance through luminous color. Working primarily with alcohol inks, encaustics, and cold wax, she creates layered compositions inspired by nature, shifting landscapes, and the fluid relationship between light and memory.

Hasan began painting as a therapeutic practice following a serious car accident, eventually developing a visual language centered on healing, contemplation, and transformation. Alongside her artistic career, she is also a practicing physician, and this dual perspective informs her sensitivity to the restorative and emotional power of visual space.

Her work has been exhibited in regional and national exhibitions and featured in publications highlighting contemporary abstract art and design.


Artist Statement

My work explores color as an emotional landscape, fluid, atmospheric, and deeply intuitive. Working primarily with alcohol inks, I create translucent layers that move between restraint and intensity, allowing color to function as memory, movement, and presence rather than representation alone. Guided by gravity, air, and spontaneity, the process produces compositions that feel organic, luminous, and alive.

Inspired by shifting skies, water, botanical forms, and the rhythms of nature, I am drawn to moments where color dissolves boundaries and becomes experiential. Saturated passages emerge beside quiet, open spaces, creating tension between stillness and motion. Rather than depicting a literal scene, these works invite contemplation through immersion in hue, transparency, and flow.

As both an artist and physician, I am deeply aware of the emotional impact of visual environments. My practice reflects an ongoing search for calm, restoration, and emotional resonance through abstraction.
