Rachel Kate Darling

I never imagined I would be drawn to painting on an iPad. I believed nothing could replace the tactile experience of brush to canvas. But when motherhood reshaped my days, it also reshaped my practice.

In the early seasons of raising young children, time became fragmented. Creative windows were measured in minutes, not hours. As I walked daily with the pram along my local coastline, I found myself deeply inspired by the colours and textures of the ever-changing landscape.

Longing to paint these scenes but unable to commit to the preparation and clean-up of a traditional studio setup, I turned to my iPad. What began as a practical solution quickly became an artistic revelation. Digital painting allowed me to work quickly and spontaneously, to capture an atmosphere in two spare minutes between nappy changes, playdates, and snack times. The process was fluid, accessible, and surprisingly satisfying.

From this season emerged the Peninsula collection: digitally painted landscapes portraying my beloved local coastline. These works reflect both place and period, a documentation of landscape intertwined with early motherhood.

As motherhood has settled into a new rhythm, I have returned to canvas painting. Yet digital illustration remains an integral part of my creative practice. Both mediums now coexist, and this is what "The Artist's Studio" looks like for me in this season of my creative life.
