Lesley Luce

Lesley Luce is a late-blooming Canadian mixed-media artist who builds intricate concentric compositions from thousands of hand-placed paper fragments. Part historian, part pattern-obsessed magpie, she disappears down research rabbit holes, gathering vintage ephemera, cultural symbols, archival imagery, and oddly specific details most people would walk past without noticing.

Each composition begins with a single fragment that refuses to leave her alone. Sometimes it's the shape. Sometimes it's a strange colour relationship. Sometimes it's a tiny historical detail that sparks an entire visual chain reaction. From there, the work expands outward intuitively through digital manipulation, colour studies, underpainting, and the painstaking placement of thousands of repeating paper fragments.

In The Daily Route, a fluorescent yellow safety vest worn by a striking Canada Post worker became the catalyst for the entire composition. Deep greens and sharp interruptions of acid yellows collapse thousands of individual images into vibrating optical patterning that flickers between abstraction and recognition.

From a distance, the work reads as geometric abstraction. Up close, hidden imagery, cultural references, and unexpected visual relationships begin to surface for viewers who slow down and look more closely.
