Colleen Cunningham
Colleen Cunningham is an artist in Brooklyn working primarily with paper collage. She has participated in dozens of exhibitions in New York, including at Islip Art Museum, The Cluster Gallery, Williamsburg Art & Historical Center, Andrew Edlin Gallery, Field Projects, Humble Arts, and NARS Foundation. She received a BFA from Pratt Institute and an MFA from the University at Buffalo.
Colleen constructs intricate paper collages that meld images from myriad sources. She approaches the compositions much like a painter. She takes great care in choosing what will be revealed, compelled to place layer upon layer until she is satisfied. Her baroque constructions are a culmination of aesthetic gratification, impulse, and control. Psychedelic explorations of space and the relationships between seemingly disparate subjects, when combined, meld into a cohesive whole that is harmonious and extravagant. They represent waking dreams where many layers of consciousness comingle.
